Onset of word form recognition in English, Welsh, and EnglishWelsh bilingual infants

چکیده
Children raised in the home as English or Welsh monolinguals or English–Welsh bilinguals were tested on untrained word form recognition using both behavioral and neurophysiological procedures. Behavioral measures confirmed the onset of a familiarity effect at 11 months in English but failed to identify it in monolingual Welsh infants between 9 and 12 months. In the neurophysiological procedure the familiarity effect was detected as early as 10 months in English but did not reach significance in monolingual Welsh. Bilingual children showed word form familiarity effects by 11 months in both languages and also revealed an online time course for word recognition that combined effects found for monolingual English and Welsh. To account for the findings, accentual, grammatical, and sociolinguistic differences between English and Welsh are considered. To connect word forms with meanings a child must first recognize particular segmental sequences and their accentual patterns as familiar. This is needed to permit the association of a form with the relevant situation, event, object, or person— in other words, to begin to learn words in the full sense. This study was designed to answer two questions in relation to this critical first step in word learning. At what age do infants begin to recognize word forms? In what ways, if at all, does a © 2007 Cambridge University Press 0142-7164/07 $15.00 Applied Psycholinguistics 28:3 476 Vihman et al.: Infant word recognition

Asymmetries in phonological development: the case of word-final cluster acquisition in Welsh-English bilingual children.
This study provides the first systematic account of word-final cluster acquisition in bilingual children. To this end, forty Welsh-English bilingual children differing in language dominance and age (2;6 to 5;0) participated in a picture-naming task in English and Welsh. The results revealed significant age and dominance effects on cluster acquisition, with greater overall accuracy on the Englis...

متن کاملOn multiword lexical units and their role in maritime dictionaries
Multi-word lexical units are a typical feature of specialized dictionaries, in particular monolingual and bilingual maritime dictionaries. The paper studies the concept of the multi-word lexical unit and considers the similarities and differences of their selection and presentation in monolingual and bilingual maritime dictionaries. The work analyses such issues as the classification of multi-w...

This study investigates cross-language lexical competition in the bilingual mental lexicon. It provides evidence for the occurrence of inhibition as well as the commonly reported facilitation during the production of cognates (words with similar phonological form and meaning in two languages) in a mixed picture naming task by highly proficient Welsh-English bilinguals. Previous studies have typ...
متن کاملA Persian-English Cross-Linguistic Dataset for Research on the Visual Processing of Cognates and Noncognates
Finding out which lexico-semantic features of cognates are critical in cross-language studies and comparing these features with noncognates helps researchers to decide which features to control in studies with cognates. Normative databases provide necessary information for this purpose. Such resources are lacking in the Persian language. We created a dataset and determined norms for the essenti...
